SUMMARY:Modern Monetary Theory with Deborah Harrington
DESCRIPTION:Location – Carnegie Library\, 192 Herne Hill Road\, London\, SE24 0AG.\n\nCome along for what promises to be a lively discussion and a fresh look at the future for public services (our NHS\, our schools\, our pensions\, and yes even our libraries) and how to move beyond that old question which often ends all debate: “How ya gonna pay for it”? \nIs it true the government has been on the verge of bankruptcy? Is paying for a green transition more than the government can afford? Is the pensions triple-lock leaving no money for schools and libraries? Do we need billionaires to fund the NHS? If you’re a housing or health campaigner or you just really care about public services\, this talk will open your eyes to a new way of understanding ‘how we pay for it’. Don’t miss it! \n  \nDeborah Harrington is co-author of the last chapter in the recently published Modern Monetary Theory: Key insights\, leading thinkers\, which includes chapters by leading MMT economists and activists from the US and the UK. The book is a project of The Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies. \nDeborah is Co-director of Public Matters\, an independent research and information partnership focused on public service. She is also an Advisory Board member of The Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies. \nFrom 2017-2020 Public Matters provided the Secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Health in All Policies in the House of Commons. \nThe Gower Initiative is part of a growing international movement which challenges the economic orthodoxy of the last four decades – of austerity. The Initiative was founded by a group of five women with a keen interest in politics and economics from a lay perspective rather than an academic one. \nDeborah Harrington’s chapter\, co-authored with Jessica Ormerod her co-director at Public Matters\, is entitled “Modern Monetary Theory and public policy in the United Kingdom”. \n  \nEvent Organised by the Friends of Carnegie Library – All welcome \n\nTickets are Free and available via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Bill Mitchell in London
DESCRIPTION:GIMMS is delighted to host its first event of 2024 with Professor Bill Mitchell. \nIn Professor Mitchell’s words: \nThere has been a major policy experiment conducted in the last few years which seems to have escaped the attention of the media and commentators. It is very rare that we have the chance to compare two diametrically opposed approaches to a global problem that has impacted on all nations. But since 2021\, most central banks have significantly increased interest rates to\, in their view\, combat the inflationary pressures that emerged. These nations have also tightened fiscal policy to\, allegedly\, ‘support’ the anti-inflationary stance of their central banks. Japan\, in contradistinction has held interest rates constant while also increasing their fiscal policy stimulus to help households and firms deal with the rising cost-of-living pressures. \nThe nations that implemented contractionary policies not only misunderstood the nature of the inflationary pressures\, but also demonstrated the poverty of the mainstream policy approach. \nIn this talk\, I discuss the reasons the mainstream approach failed and why it is unfit for purpose. \nNOTE: We would ask that people assemble from 13.00 onwards for a prompt 13.30 start to make the most of this important opportunity. Coffee and cake will be available in the break which will be followed by a Q&A session.rates \nBill asks that you wear masks at the event to protect yourself and those around you. \nTickets available via Eventbrite
