SUMMARY:Bill Mitchell to launch 'Macroeconomics' textbook in London
DESCRIPTION:GIMMS is delighted to be co-hosting with Macmillian International Higher Education an evening with the internationally respected author Bill Mitchell to launch the publication of ‘Macroeconomics’. \n \nThis groundbreaking new core textbook will allow the reader to take a more critical approach to the prevalent assumptions around the subject of macroeconomics\, by comparing and contrasting heterodox and orthodox approaches to theory and policy. The first such textbook to develop a heterodox model from the ground up\, it is based on the principles of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) as derived from the theories of Keynes\, Kalecki\, Veblen\, Marx\, and Minsky\, amongst others. Placing a focus on the realities of how money and banks operate\, and on applied theories of financial instability\, this text gives an unrivalled real-world insight into how the economy actually works. \nPlease join us in celebrating the launch of this text and take the opportunity to hear Bill’s own insights as to what the book sets out to achieve! \n*** Bill Mitchell will be speaking at 1730*** \nSpaces for this event are limited\, so please register to reserve your place at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/official-launch-of-macroeconomics-tickets-56695101575 \nRegistration is essential

SUMMARY:Local Government Funding: Challenging the Status Quo
DESCRIPTION:Professor Bill Mitchell\, who is on a promotional tour for his new book ‘Macroeconomics’ will address a number of key issues\, including: \n– The myopic nature of austerity – it ends up costing more in the long term.\n– Why the British government faces no financial constraints and is unlike a household or local government.\n– Why first-class provision of public services only depends on the availability of real resources.\n– The policy options available to our currency issuing sovereign government that can be used within real resources constraints\, to help local government finances.\n– How localised unemployment\, underemployment\, insecure employment and low-paid employment can be tackled through a central government funded policy such as a Job Guarantee Scheme.

SUMMARY:Professor Bill Mitchell and Professor Steve Hall Seminar – London
DESCRIPTION:At a time of great change and political\, social and environmental uncertainty both nationally and globally\, it is even more vital to challenge the economic orthodoxy which has informed the political agendas of successive governments both on the right and the left for decades. \nThe GIMMS team therefore cordially invites you to join us for this MMT seminar in London to explore the potential for developing effective communication strategies to engage the public in a much-needed conversation about modern monetary reality and its connection with the daily lives of working people and their families. \nBill Mitchell is a professor of economics at the University of Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia and one of the founding developers of Modern Monetary Theory. He is is a prolific author and his most recent co-authored academic textbook ‘Macroeconomics’ which was launched last year in London is now in its third reprint. \nIn his presentation Professor Mitchell will focus on: \n\nchallenging the preconceptions which are embedded in the public consciousness and educational and other public institutions about how money works;\ngiving people the tools with which they can take a more critical approach to the subject of economics;\nand show how such an understanding can assist in the development of solutions to the pressing economic\, social and ecological issues we face;\nexploring what progressives need to do to win back the support of working people.\n\nJoining Professor Mitchell on the platform will be Professor Steve Hall who is an Emeritus Professor of Criminology who has worked at the Universities of Teesside\, Northumbria and Durham. He is also co-author of the book published in 2017 ‘The Rise of the Right: English nationalism and the transformation of working-class politics.’ \nThroughout his career Professor Hall’s main concern has been economic history and its relationship to violence\, social unrest and far-right politics. In his presentation\, he will explain the current rise of populism throughout the West\, and why the MMTmovement should see it as an opportunity to attract the popular support it needs to push past the liberal left’s reluctant\, moribund political establishment. He will emphasise the need to develop a communication strategy resting on a cluster of clear and easily comprehensible messages about MMT’s ability to provide or contribute to developing solutions to the major issues which weigh heavily on people’s minds – jobs\, housing\, infrastructural decay\, private debt\, crime\, terrorism\, popular sovereignty and mass immigration. \n  \nTickets available from Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:The Post-Covid Economy
DESCRIPTION:What could a Post-Covid Economy look like? Join GIMMS and our speaker Philip Armstrong to find out.\nCovid-19 pandemic began as a public health crisis with devastating consequences in terms of lives lost but has quickly developed along with the climate crisis into the biggest economic and social challenges facing our country. Over the last few months\, the government has spent vast sums to lessen the worst effects of lockdown\, by providing financial support to corporations and a furlough scheme to millions of workers in an attempt to stabilise the economy; an attempt to put the economy onto life support while avoiding the worst-case scenario of a deep and protracted recession with its mass unemployment. \nBut the pandemic has laid bare the consequences of 10 years of cuts to public sector spending\, widening wealth and income inequality\, combined with extended political uncertainty over Brexit to highlight the real human cost to society of government policies.  For years we have witnessed daily\, an NHS and social care system which has been overwhelmed\, public services stretched to their limit and local government leaving us unable to respond effectively due to years of cuts to its budgets by central government. \nCan we rise to the challenges posed by climate change and the current pandemic? Do we have time to correct our path and save our planet and provide for a more sustainable future? \nPoliticians\, journalists and institutions are claiming that\, like a household or firm\, the government has maxed out its credit card in an emergency and will need to pay that back by or increasing taxes or making cuts to public expenditure. So\, it is ever more vital to be able to confront the economic orthodoxy which has informed the political agendas of governments on the right and left for decades and for policymakers to take a new approach.  If nothing else\, this calamity has exposed the lie of austerity and demonstrated quite clearly what is achievable in spending terms for a government with both sovereign currency-issuing powers and the political will to act. \nNow is the time to lay bare the false narratives about how governments spend and explore what makes for a balanced economy and a fully functioning society which works for everyone. \nGIMMS’ Associate Member Phil Armstrong\, author of ‘Can economics make a difference?’ to be published later in the year\, will be exposing the sham narrative of how governments spend and how it is paid for and will explore in the context of modern monetary realities how we can move towards a sustainable green economy\, provide jobs and essential universal basic services\, and tackle poverty and inequality. \nRegister via Eventbrite \n***You will be sent a Zoom meeting link after registering on Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Phil Armstrong in Conversation with Neil Wilson
DESCRIPTION:The GIMMS team is delighted to host its next ‘in conversation’ event at which Phil Armstrong will be talking to Neil Wilson.\n  \n\nNeil is an expert in finance and information systems and one of the UK’s leading thinkers about MMT. After more than 30 years in the systems business\, Neil learned the hard way that operations rarely follow the manual. Moving from network crashes to financial crashes\, Neil was intrigued as to whether the economy could be fixed with a reboot – which lead him to Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). His work challenges the high-priesthood of Important Grey Men who refer to people as ‘resources’ and who believe debt is bad for government and good for you.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe dreams of a world where everyone who wants a living wage job can find one\, close to their home\, their friends and family. \nYou are invited to join us for this informal event which we are sure will be both stimulating and insightful. \n\n\n \nTickets available via Eventbrite\n  \nRegistration will commence at 1.45 (GMT) for a prompt 2pm start. Tickets are limited. If you cannot attend for any reason let us know. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Phil Armstrong in conversation with Ndongo Sylla
DESCRIPTION:GIMMS is delighted to present another in its series ‘In Conversation.’ \nPhil Armstrong\, Associate Member of GIMMS and author of ‘Can Heterodox Economics Make a Difference published in November 2020 will be talking to Ndongo Sylla. \nDr. Ndongo Samba Sylla is a Senegalese development economist. His research focuses on fair trade\, labour markets in developing countries\, social movements\, democratic theory\, economic and monetary sovereignty. He is currently Research and Programme manager at the West Africa office of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Dakar. \nWhilst the objective of GIMMS has been to bring an awareness of MMT to a UK audience\, the domestic context is just one part of the picture. Given the tectonic shifts in geopolitical power that are currently taking place\, we believe that it is even more essential to bring a deeper awareness to western audiences of the challenges faced by countries in the Global South which have their roots in colonial and neo-colonial exploitation by western powers and how they might be resolved using an MMT framework. \nGiven the challenges we face in addressing the climate crisis and the vast inequalities that have arisen under the current toxic economic system which dominates\, it is in the interests of world citizens that nations come together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation to develop solutions to these pressing problems. \nWe invite you to join us for this informal event which we are sure will be both stimulating and insightful. \nRegistration will commence at 14.30 (GMT) for a prompt start at 1500 (GMT). \nTickets are available via Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/phil-armstrong-in-conversation-with-ndongo-sylla-tickets-409777444367

SUMMARY:Scheduled publication of "Modern Monetary Theory: Key Insights\, Leading Thinkers"
DESCRIPTION:Modern Monetary Theory: Key Insights\, Leading Thinkers – Edited by Professor L. Randall Wray and the Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies is scheduled to be published by Edward Elgar Publishing in January 2023.\n  \nCover design based on an original concept by www.marke.photography with images from Shutterstock\nProviding an up-to-date account of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) with contributions from the world’s leading experts\, each chapter offers new insights on the topic\, building upon MMT’s established body of work. This innovative book analyses key economic issues from a wide set of regions including the UK\, Europe and the Global South\, addressing previous concerns that MMT is too US-focused. \nAlongside ground-breaking research written by MMT’s original developers and leading academics\, the book also includes contributions from economic historians and public policy campaigners\, highlighting how MMT contributes to challenging neoliberalism and the hegemony of mainstream macroeconomics. Offering an examination of the existing legal\, institutional and policy framework which governs the UK Exchequer in particular\, it examines how the central claims of MMT map onto the financial activities of the UK government. \nThis will be key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate economics students\, as well as more advanced scholars of the discipline\, particularly for those looking into theories of finance\, money and banking. It will also have a wider appeal across the social sciences\, including politics and sociology students. \n  \nThis is a fascinating\, eclectic group of professional papers in which the reader may explore both the first principles of Modern Monetary Theory and many institutional and historical details that lend weight to the conceptual framework. SUMMARY:Modern Monetary Theory with Deborah Harrington
DESCRIPTION:Location – Carnegie Library\, 192 Herne Hill Road\, London\, SE24 0AG.\n\nCome along for what promises to be a lively discussion and a fresh look at the future for public services (our NHS\, our schools\, our pensions\, and yes even our libraries) and how to move beyond that old question which often ends all debate: “How ya gonna pay for it”? \nIs it true the government has been on the verge of bankruptcy? Is paying for a green transition more than the government can afford? Is the pensions triple-lock leaving no money for schools and libraries? Do we need billionaires to fund the NHS? If you’re a housing or health campaigner or you just really care about public services\, this talk will open your eyes to a new way of understanding ‘how we pay for it’. Don’t miss it! \n  \nDeborah Harrington is co-author of the last chapter in the recently published Modern Monetary Theory: Key insights\, leading thinkers\, which includes chapters by leading MMT economists and activists from the US and the UK. The book is a project of The Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies. \nDeborah is Co-director of Public Matters\, an independent research and information partnership focused on public service. She is also an Advisory Board member of The Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies. \nFrom 2017-2020 Public Matters provided the Secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Health in All Policies in the House of Commons. \nThe Gower Initiative is part of a growing international movement which challenges the economic orthodoxy of the last four decades – of austerity. The Initiative was founded by a group of five women with a keen interest in politics and economics from a lay perspective rather than an academic one. \nDeborah Harrington’s chapter\, co-authored with Jessica Ormerod her co-director at Public Matters\, is entitled “Modern Monetary Theory and public policy in the United Kingdom”. \n  \nEvent Organised by the Friends of Carnegie Library – All welcome \n\nTickets are Free and available via Eventbrite.
