SUMMARY:Professor Bill Mitchell and Professor Steve Hall Seminar - Manchester
DESCRIPTION:At a time of great change and political\, social and environmental uncertainty both nationally and globally\, it is even more vital to challenge the economic orthodoxy which has informed the political agendas of successive governments both on the right and the left for decades. \nThe GIMMS team therefore cordially invites you to join us for this MMT seminar in Manchester to explore the potential for developing effective communication strategies to engage the public in a much-needed conversation about modern monetary reality and its connection with the daily lives of working people and their families. \nBill Mitchell is a professor of economics at the University of Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia and one of the founding developers of Modern Monetary Theory. He is is a prolific author and his most recent co-authored academic textbook ‘Macroeconomics’ which was launched last year in London is now in its third reprint. \nIn his presentation Professor Mitchell will focus on: \n\nchallenging the preconceptions which are embedded in the public consciousness and educational and other public institutions about how money works;\ngiving people the tools with which they can take a more critical approach to the subject of economics;\nand show how such an understanding can assist in the development of solutions to the pressing economic\, social and ecological issues we face;\nexploring what progressives need to do to win back the support of working people.\n\nJoining Professor Mitchell on the platform will be Professor Steve Hall who is an Emeritus Professor of Criminology who has worked at the Universities of Teesside\, Northumbria and Durham. He is also co-author of the book published in 2017 ‘The Rise of the Right: English nationalism and the transformation of working-class politics.’ \nThroughout his career Professor Hall’s main concern has been economic history and its relationship to violence\, social unrest and far-right politics. In his presentation\, he will explain the current rise of populism throughout the West\, and why the MMTmovement should see it as an opportunity to attract the popular support it needs to push past the liberal left’s reluctant\, moribund political establishment. He will emphasise the need to develop a communication strategy resting on a cluster of clear and easily comprehensible messages about MMT’s ability to provide or contribute to developing solutions to the major issues which weigh heavily on people’s minds – jobs\, housing\, infrastructural decay\, private debt\, crime\, terrorism\, popular sovereignty and mass immigration. \n  \nTickets available from Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:Local Government Funding: Challenging the Status Quo
DESCRIPTION:Professor Bill Mitchell\, who is on a promotional tour for his new book ‘Macroeconomics’ will address a number of key issues\, including: \n– The myopic nature of austerity – it ends up costing more in the long term.\n– Why the British government faces no financial constraints and is unlike a household or local government.\n– Why first-class provision of public services only depends on the availability of real resources.\n– The policy options available to our currency issuing sovereign government that can be used within real resources constraints\, to help local government finances.\n– How localised unemployment\, underemployment\, insecure employment and low-paid employment can be tackled through a central government funded policy such as a Job Guarantee Scheme.

SUMMARY:Bill Mitchell to launch 'Macroeconomics' textbook in London
DESCRIPTION:GIMMS is delighted to be co-hosting with Macmillian International Higher Education an evening with the internationally respected author Bill Mitchell to launch the publication of ‘Macroeconomics’. \n \nThis groundbreaking new core textbook will allow the reader to take a more critical approach to the prevalent assumptions around the subject of macroeconomics\, by comparing and contrasting heterodox and orthodox approaches to theory and policy. The first such textbook to develop a heterodox model from the ground up\, it is based on the principles of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) as derived from the theories of Keynes\, Kalecki\, Veblen\, Marx\, and Minsky\, amongst others. Placing a focus on the realities of how money and banks operate\, and on applied theories of financial instability\, this text gives an unrivalled real-world insight into how the economy actually works. \nPlease join us in celebrating the launch of this text and take the opportunity to hear Bill’s own insights as to what the book sets out to achieve! \n*** Bill Mitchell will be speaking at 1730*** \nSpaces for this event are limited\, so please register to reserve your place at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/official-launch-of-macroeconomics-tickets-56695101575 \nRegistration is essential
